Shocking earthquake disaster in Afghanistan
On 31 August 2025 the east of Afghanistan was shaken by a devastating magnitude 6.0 earthquake. The epicenter was only 30 kilometers from the city of Jalalabad and at a depth of just 8 kilometers. This shallow depth meant the tremors were felt particularly strongly at the surface.

The region, which had recently been affected by severe floods, is now suffering from the significant damage caused by the earthquake. The region's infrastructural weaknesses, being among the poorest in Afghanistan, further exacerbate the situation. More than 600 fatalities have already been confirmed, and it is feared that the death toll could rise to as many as a thousand.
Gerald Schöpfer, President of the Austrian Red Cross, expressed his concern: "Only two years after the devastating earthquake in autumn 2023, one of the poorest regions is again shaken by a catastrophic quake. At least 600 people have already lost their lives, many remain buried under the rubble. The number of injured and dead is likely to rise massively. Aftershocks are to be expected. Aid from Austria
The Austrian Red Cross responded immediately to the disaster. From the first hours after the quake, staff of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) have been active in the affected areas. Together with local authorities, they are rescuing people trapped under the rubble and caring for the injured.

Mobile health teams, which were established with support from the ÖRK, are being dispatched to the region to provide rapid medical assistance.
