For many years the Chamber of Labour Upper Austria has been offering the so-called AK-Ferienspaß. What began as a small project has meanwhile developed into one of the largest holiday programs in the country. The idea behind it is simple but brilliant: to relieve parents by providing their children with an exciting and varied holiday time.
But why is this so important? In Austria, as in many other countries, the summer holidays are a time that brings both joy and organizational challenges. The children are off school, but most parents still have to go to work. That means a care gap arises that somehow has to be filled.
The numbers speak for themselves!
According to a 2025 study by Statistics Austria, over 70% of parents in Austria are employed. That means that in the summer months a considerable number of families rely on external care services. This is where the AK-Ferienspaß comes into play.
In 2025 more than 5,000 children took part in this program, and demand increases every year. No wonder, because the offering is not only varied but also free for members of the Chamber of Labour Upper Austria.
A program that leaves nothing to be desired
What can children expect at AK-Ferienspaß 2026? The answer: a colorful program that leaves nothing to be desired. From sporting activities to creative workshops to exciting excursions — there is something for every taste.
- Sport and exercise:Whether climbing, bouldering or dancing — the children can really let off steam and try out new sports.
- Creativity:In workshops, children can let their imagination run free, whether painting, crafting or even working on film projects.
- Adventure:Excursions to the fire brigade, police or a farm are also on the program. Here children can gain exciting insights into different professions and ways of life.
But that's not all. The program is offered in cooperation with the Volkshochschule Upper Austria in 15 districts. That means many children have the opportunity to take part in this fantastic offering near them.
Experts praise the program
AK President Andreas Stangl emphasizes: "With the AK-Ferienspaß we support working parents in being able to better reconcile family and work." This support is not only a blessing for parents, but also for the children, who get to experience a varied and exciting holiday time.
Education experts also praise the program. Dr. Anna Huber, a renowned educator, says: "The AK-Ferienspaß is an excellent example of how to provide children not only with meaningful leisure activities, but also to support them in their development."
What does this mean for the future?
The Chamber of Labour Upper Austria plans to further expand the offering in the coming years. The goal is to give even more children the opportunity to participate in this program. In addition, new program elements are to be added to offer children even more variety.
In the long term, the AK-Ferienspaß could even serve as a model for similar programs in other federal states. Because the demand for childcare offerings during the holidays is not only high in Upper Austria.
A model for all of Austria?
The success of the AK-Ferienspaß in Upper Austria could inspire other federal states to develop similar programs. One thing is clear: reconciling family and work is an issue that concerns many parents, and solutions like the AK-Ferienspaß are urgently needed.
In federal states like Styria or Tyrol there are already smaller holiday programs, but none is as comprehensive and well organized as the AK-Ferienspaß. Perhaps in the coming years we will see other Chambers of Labour launch similar offerings.
