These high-tech systems are installed underground in parks and green spaces as well as in tree pits. Where this is not possible, the so-called Gießbags are used: irrigation bags that are placed around the trunk of the young tree and filled with up to 75 liters of water.

Each of these bags is regularly refilled, while a further 100 liters are poured directly into the tree pit. These measures are crucial to protect young trees during the first four years of their lives, as they are particularly vulnerable to environmental stress during this time.

The sponge-city principle: an innovative solution

But the city of Vienna goes one step further. With the sponge-city principle, it has developed an innovative technique that expands the root zone of trees beneath roads, parking lots and sidewalks. This enables better storage of rainwater and helps the trees to better withstand stress factors such as heat and drought.

"The sponge-city principle not only promotes healthy urban trees, but also improves the urban microclimate, binds CO₂ and supports biodiversity," explains an expert from the Vienna City Gardens. "It is a decisive contribution to resource conservation and to adapting to climate change."
