Planning the paternity month: Three deadlines that matter before and after the birth

Paternity month and the family-time bonus are separate entitlements. Employees in Austria should know these deadlines, requirements and amounts.

A child rarely sticks to the employer’s calendar. For the Papamonat, employees still have to plan several dates precisely: the advance notice before the birth, the immediate notification afterward, and the notification of the actual start. In addition, the Familienzeitbonus is a separate application with its own requirements. Anyone who wants to use both benefits must coordinate the periods down to the exact day.

The Papamonat in Austria is not parental leave and not paid vacation. Fathers employed in the private sector generally have a statutory entitlement to one month of leave with loss of pay. The other parent in a same-sex partnership can also use the entitlement under the statutory conditions. Different rules may apply for the public service, certain federal states, and more favourable collective agreements.

This guide explains the situation as of July 2026. It helps with preparation, but in special cases such as preterm birth, a hospital stay, living or working abroad, or interrupted employment it does not replace individual advice from the Chamber of Labour, social insurance, or legal counsel.

Papamonat and Familienzeitbonus are two different things

The Papamonat is the employment-law entitlement vis-à-vis the employer. During this period the obligation to work is suspended, but the employer does not have to pay a salary. The Familienzeitbonus, by contrast, is a state cash benefit that must be applied for at the competent health insurance provider. It does not arise automatically from reporting the Papamonat.

This separation is crucial for planning. An employee may have an employment-law entitlement to leave but fail to meet a requirement for the Familienzeitbonus. Likewise, a late or incorrectly chosen bonus period can lead to a funding gap. Therefore, both procedures should be checked separately and then aligned in time.

Which three notifications to the employer count

For the statutory legal entitlement, the Väter-Karenzgesetz provides a clear sequence:

  1. Before the birth: At the latest three months before the expected due date, the employer must be informed that the paternity month will be taken. The expected due date and the anticipated start date must be communicated.
  2. Immediately after the birth: The employer must be notified of the birth immediately.
  3. Within one week: No later than one week after the birth, the exact start date must be communicated.

The advance notice should be given in a verifiable manner, for example in writing with confirmed receipt. This reduces misunderstandings about the date and content. If the child is born prematurely and a timely advance notice was therefore not possible, this obligation does not apply. If other deadlines are missed, the paternity month is not automatically excluded; however, it then requires the employer's consent to an agreement.

In which period the paternity month must fall

The leave lasts one month. It can generally run from the day after the birth until the end of the mother's employment ban. If there is no statutory employment ban—for example because the mother is self-employed, unemployed, or not gainfully employed—eight weeks after the birth apply instead, or twelve weeks in the case of preterm, multiple, or cesarean births.

For the family time bonus, discharge from the hospital is particularly important: in the case of a hospital birth, the cash payment is generally due no earlier than the discharge of mother and child. Anyone who wants to use the paternity month and the bonus to coincide should therefore not set the start too hastily. Special rules apply for medically necessary hospital stays; these should be clarified with the health insurance provider before filing the notification.

A month is not a freely assembled package of workdays. Depending on the start date, it comprises 28, 29, 30, or 31 consecutive calendar days. Weekends and public holidays are included.

How much the family time bonus is in 2026

The family time bonus in 2026 amounts to €54.87 per day. Depending on the length of the chosen family month, the following total amounts apply:

  • 28 days: €1,536.36
  • 29 days: €1,591.23
  • 30 days: €1,646.10
  • 31 days: €1,700.97

This is not a replacement for the previous net salary, but a flat-rate payment. Households should therefore calculate before the birth how large the difference to ongoing expenses will be. A monthly budget with fixed costs, savings, expected bonus and the timing of the payment is helpful. The application will be processed separately; therefore the money should not be planned as if it were available on the first day of leave.

What requirements must be met for the bonus

For the family time bonus, employment-law leave alone is not sufficient. Essential prerequisites include entitlement to and receipt of family allowance, the family's main residence in Austria, a shared household, and generally identical registered primary residences for the applying parent, the child and the other parent.

In addition, immediately before the start of the benefit period there must generally be 182 days of employment subject to health and pension insurance in Austria. Interruptions totaling up to 14 days may be permitted. Benefits from unemployment insurance must generally not have been received during this observation period. Because even short periods can be decisive, people who have changed jobs, experienced unemployment, had a longer interruption, or worked across borders should initiate the review early with their health insurance provider.

During the family time, all gainful employment must actually be interrupted. Annual leave or sick leave do not count as a substitute. After the family month, employment must be resumed; a subsequent period of paternity leave may count as resumption.

Why the time periods must match exactly

The bonus can be claimed for 28, 29, 30 or 31 consecutive days. The chosen duration must match the actual family time and fall entirely within 91 days of the birth. The application itself must be submitted to the competent health insurance provider no later than 121 days from the day of birth.

These two deadlines are easily confused: 91 days limit the possible benefit period, 121 days the application deadline. A later application does not extend the benefit period. The duration of benefits must be specified definitively in the application; a later change is only possible once and under certain conditions.

In practice this means: First the earliest possible start and the end of the employment-law paternity month are checked. Then it is checked whether the same period meets the bonus rules. Only then should the specific dates be sent to the employer and the health insurance.

What applies to protection against dismissal

Protection against dismissal and termination begins with the advance notice, but no earlier than four months before the calculated due date. It ends four weeks after the end of the paternity month. In the case of a premature birth, where the advance notice could be omitted, the protection begins with the notification of the actual start date.

Time off is also taken into account for entitlements that depend on length of service. Nevertheless, the paternity month is not the same as paid absence from work on account of childbirth, vacation, or parental leave. Anyone planning a job change at the same time should therefore also check the employment contract, notice periods, and the start date of the new job. The jobspot guide to Arbeitsvertrag in Österreichshows which details should be clarified before signing.

A checklist for planning before the birth

  • Mark the estimated due date and the latest date for the advance notice in your calendar.
  • Send written, verifiable advance notice of the planned start to the employer.
  • Check shared household, primary residence(s) and the expected receipt of family allowance.
  • Verify 182 days of employment as well as any possible interruptions or unemployment benefits.
  • Calculate the financial gap between lost salary and the family time bonus.
  • Prepare documents and the application form for the health insurance provider.
  • Inform the employer immediately after the birth and report the start within one week.
  • Align Papamonat and the family time bonus to the same calendar days.

The time afterwards also deserves planning. Those who move directly into parental leave, parental part-time or another working-time arrangement must observe separate deadlines and requirements for that. The contribution to \"Negotiating part-time work helps with hours, salary and development opportunities. For a later career start, the guide to the Return to work after parental leave a practical structure.

Typical mistakes that can be avoided

Problems most often arise when Papamonat and Familienzeitbonus are treated as a single application. Taking leave instead of a real interruption, a start before hospital discharge, inconsistent dates, or an overlooked interruption of employment can also jeopardize the bonus.

Another mistake is assuming that the Papamonat automatically covers later care gaps. Different instruments apply for illness or care. Which requirements apply there is explained in the jobspot article on Care leave in Austria.

In cases of premature birth, prolonged hospital stay, separate residences, ties to another country, or employment outside the private sector, standard dates should not be used. In such cases, a written statement from the responsible authority is advisable before reporting a binding period.

Conclusion: Plan three deadlines and two entitlements together

The Papamonat provides time for the initial family phase, but it is not paid leave. The Familienzeitbonus can cushion part of the loss of income if household circumstances, employment history, benefit period, and the application align. The crucial thing is to examine both entitlements separately and then connect them with exact dates.

The best next step is concrete: enter the calculated due date, the advance notice period, and the expected time window into a calendar. Then check employment periods and the household budget, and have special cases assessed early by the Arbeiterkammer or the health insurance. That way a good intention becomes a reliable plan.
