Ergonomic computer workstation design serves to increase the effectiveness and productivity of the worker. His or her office is designed so that it meets the requirements of the work. At their workstation the employee should not become fatigued or suffer chronic health damage. A few things should be considered for ergonomic workstation design. First, it is important that the office chair is adjustable. It can be easily adapted to the user's physical characteristics. Armrests and a flexible backrest are good for supporting a healthy sitting posture. Particularly beneficial is the mobility of the chair, so that the person seated can also change their sitting position. If the spine moves at regular intervals, it prevents tension and herniated discs.

The ergonomic workstation: the desk

The desk is an important factor for ergonomic posture at work. If it is height-adjustable, it can be adapted to the size of the respective employee. A tiltable tabletop also promotes a healthy body posture. On the desk there is an ergonomic mouse, an adjustable monitor, and an ergonomic keyboard. With these devices the worker keeps their head, arms, and hands in a natural position.

The ergonomic workstation: the optimal angle

Ergonomic computer workstation design also includes the adjustment of the various adjustable devices:

  • The head is about 40 to 60 centimeters away from the screen.
  • The head tilt when looking at the screen is at most 45°.
  • When sitting, there is a 90° angle between the back and the legs.
  • The knees are bent at a 90° angle.
  • The soles of the feet rest on the floor.
  • The forearms are parallel to the thighs,
  • the hands are straight on the keyboard
  • and the office chair stabilizes the lumbar spine.

The ergonomic workstation: variation of posture

In the job it is important that health does not suffer because of the work. Therefore it makes sense to set up your computer workstation ergonomically. Ergonomic computer workstation design gives the employee the opportunity to change or even leave their position. Generally, the spine suffers from prolonged sitting. At an ergonomic workstation the employee is not at risk of suffering long-term damage from sitting with a rounded or hollow back. Chairs that can move in all directions—forward and backward, up and down, right and left—are very beneficial. To ensure that a career does not permanently harm the employee, an ergonomic mouse and an ergonomic keyboard also help. They prevent painful tendon sheath inflammations. Part of the ergonomic ideal, however, is that the employee repeatedly moves, stands up and walks around to stretch the spine. This freedom must be ensured in the workplace.
