Registering as unemployed: What matters immediately after losing your job

After job loss, quick action matters. This is how employees register as unemployed with the AMS, submit the application and avoid deadline problems.

As of: 29 June 2026. Job loss is rarely just a professional setback. Within a few days, outstanding claims, applications, health insurance, income and contact with the Public Employment Service (AMS) must be sorted out. It is precisely in this phase that mistakes easily happen: the AMS application is submitted too late, a review appointment is missed, a document is missing or a change is not reported.

The current labor market makes swift and orderly action more important. According to the labor market report for May 2026, at the end of May 301,676 people were registered as unemployed with the AMS, plus 76,602 people in AMS training programs. The national unemployment rate was 7.1 percent, and the average duration of the job search was higher than the previous year. For those affected this means: not only hope for the next offer, but take care of the administrative part immediately and properly.

This article explains how to register as unemployed in Austria, when the application for unemployment benefits should be submitted, which information is important and which obligations after registration must be taken seriously.

Registering as unemployed means: submitting the AMS application

Since the AMS reform in 2025, the central step has been formulated more clearly: anyone who is unemployed and wants to receive money from the AMS should submit the application for unemployment benefits directly. According to the AMS, one is regarded as registered unemployed with this application. The application is therefore not just a form for cash benefits, but also the starting point for placement and support.

This is important because many affected people still distinguish between 'registering as seeking work' and 'applying for unemployment benefits.' Practically speaking: when the employment relationship ends and no new job immediately follows, the AMS application should be submitted in good time. This applies after dismissal by the employer as well as after a fixed-term employment relationship, mutual termination or resignation by the employee.

Anyone who is just preparing a termination meeting or is still negotiating exit, remaining vacation and the employment reference should nevertheless keep the AMS step in mind. The article "When the job change gets serious: preparing the resignation conversationHelps with the preliminary phase of employment law; this article starts on the first day without employment.

The most important deadline: no later than the first day

The AMS notice is clear: the application for money from the AMS must be submitted no later than the first day of unemployment. If that first day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday, the AMS names the following working day as the latest deadline. Anyone who registers later or does not provide necessary information risks delayed payments and gaps in health or pension insurance.

At the same time, you do not have to wait until the last moment. The AMS application may already be submitted three weeks before the end of employment. This is particularly useful when the end of the employment relationship is certain but documents are still missing or a personal appointment may be needed. Those who start early have more time for follow-up questions.

Important: submitting early does not mean submitting inaccurately. The application should be completed as if the unemployment had already occurred so that the AMS can assess the entitlement. If data are still unclear, those affected should ask the AMS and submit changes as soon as they are confirmed.

MeinAMS or an in-person visit?

The standard case is electronic application via MeinAMS. The AMS describes MeinAMS as a service portal through which, among other things, monetary benefits can be applied for, applications can be managed, personal data changed and care agreements viewed. For identity verification, ID Austria can be particularly fast; alternatively, according to the AMS, access is also possible with an email address and password plus an activation code sent by RSa-Brief.

Especially after job loss, you should check whether access already works. Those who have ID Austria can often process the application faster online. Anyone without access, without the technical equipment or who has difficulties with the online application can submit the application in person at the responsible AMS-Geschäftsstelle. The Arbeiterkammer also points out that electronic application is recommended, but a personal application remains possible if the online route does not work.

A short preliminary check is practically useful: Can you log in to MeinAMS? Is the current residential address correct? Are the phone number and email address up to date? Are bank account details available? Those who sort out these points before their first day of unemployment save stress.

Which information and documents are important

The AMS application requires not only the name and social security number. Crucial are all details that may affect the entitlement, amount and start date of the benefit. These include the last employer, start and end of the employment relationship, the type of termination, payment in lieu of unused vacation, severance pay, ongoing income, bank account details, citizenship or residence permit, as well as childcare responsibilities or restrictions on availability.

Not every document has to look the same in every case. Still, it is advisable to have the most important documents collected and ready: notice of termination or agreement to terminate, employment record or employment contract, latest payroll or salary statements, proof of identity, registration confirmation if relevant, bank account details and evidence of special circumstances. If AMS requests further evidence, any deadline set should be taken seriously.

Outstanding claims from the previous employment relationship are not just a matter between employee and employer. Remaining vacation, severance pay or continued pay can affect when unemployment benefits are actually paid out. Those who are unsure should check the final settlement in parallel and clarify open questions in writing.

Support begins after the application

Submitting the application does not complete the administrative part. AMS checks eligibility and links the cash benefit with placement, counselling and obligations to cooperate. Affected persons receive appointments, information on job search and, in many cases, a case management agreement. This can set out which types of work are being sought, which application activities are expected and what support is envisaged.

Check-in appointments are particularly important. The Chamber of Labour warns that a missed check-in appointment can lead to a loss of benefits if there is no acceptable reason and no timely response. If you are ill, have a compelling appointment, or are prevented from attending for another important reason, you should inform AMS immediately and have evidence ready.

Having a system also pays off for your own job search. A list of applications, responses, appointments and open questions helps in discussions with the AMS and in everyday life. Reporting obligations: What must be reported immediately

The AMS emphasizes that changes in economic and personal circumstances must be reported immediately if they could affect entitlement. These include, for example, taking up employment, self-employment or marginal employment, illness, hospital stay, rehabilitation, stay abroad, change of address, start of training, childcare, caregiving obligations or changes in income.

Interruptions are particularly sensitive. According to the AMS, re-notification after an interruption, such as sick leave or a stay abroad, must, since July 1, 2025, take place immediately; benefits will only be paid out from the day of re-notification. Re-notification can be made via MeinAMS, by telephone or in person. In case of sick leave, a medical certificate must be submitted from the first day.

Even a small side job must not be done on the side. Anyone receiving unemployment benefit or emergency assistance should check before any employment whether and how it is permitted, and report it to the AMS. The rules on additional earnings that have applied since 2026 have become more complex; there's an overview on jobspot Marginal employment while receiving unemployment benefits: What applies now.

When benefits can be suspended or blocked

Not every delay automatically means that there is no entitlement. Sometimes the payout is paused, even though there is a fundamental entitlement to unemployment benefits. The Chamber of Labour (Arbeiterkammer) cites, for example, outstanding remaining leave, severance pay, or continued payment of wages as situations in which unemployment benefits are not paid out immediately. This should be taken into account in financial planning.

Another issue is the suspension of unemployment benefits. According to the Chamber of Labour, anyone who voluntarily terminates an employment relationship may face a suspension of 28 days. This generally also applies to voluntary termination during the probationary period. The duration of the benefit is not shortened by this, but the start of the payout may be delayed. The AMS must record a statement in which the reasons for the termination are documented.

It is important not to settle such cases verbally under stress. If there were important reasons for the termination, they should be documented in a comprehensible manner. If you receive a formal notice and believe it is incorrect, you should observe the appeal period and seek advice quickly.

Do not forget health insurance and financial planning

Unemployment does not only affect monthly income. The Chamber of Labour points out that unemployed persons are covered by health insurance during the benefit period. This is precisely why a delayed registration is problematic: the AMS explicitly warns of potential gaps in health and pension insurance if the application is submitted too late or necessary data is not provided.

In parallel, a short financial plan should be created. When does the last salary end? Is there holiday compensation, special payments, outstanding overtime, or severance pay? When can the first AMS payout realistically be expected? Which fixed costs are due in the next six weeks? Anyone who sorts these points out early can react faster and does not have to make every decision under pressure.
