Shocking earthquake disaster in Afghanistan
On 31 August 2025 the east of Afghanistan was struck by a devastating magnitude 6.0 earthquake. The epicenter was only 30 kilometers from the city of Jalalabad and at a depth of just 8 kilometers. This shallow depth meant the tremors were felt especially strongly at the surface.
The devastating impact
The region, which had only recently been affected by severe flooding, now suffers from the significant damage caused by the earthquake. The region's infrastructural weaknesses, as one of the poorest in Afghanistan, further exacerbate the situation. More than 600 fatalities have already been confirmed, and it is feared that the death toll could rise to as many as a thousand.
Gerald Schöpfer, President of the Austrian Red Cross, expressed concern: "Only two years after the devastating earthquake in autumn 2023, one of the poorest regions is again being shaken by a catastrophic quake. At least 600 people have already lost their lives, and many remain trapped under the rubble. The number of injured and dead is likely to rise sharply. Aftershocks are to be expected. Please donate now so that we can help the people of Afghanistan!"
Aid from Austria
The Austrian Red Cross responded immediately to the disaster. From the first hours after the quake, staff of the Afghan Red Crescent (ARCS) have been operating in the affected areas. Together with local authorities, they are rescuing people buried under the rubble and caring for the injured.
The Austrian Red Cross (ÖRK) is also supporting its partners on site. Mobile health teams that were set up with the ÖRK are being sent to the region to provide rapid medical assistance. These teams are specifically prepared to operate efficiently in crisis situations and to carry out life-saving measures.
Psychosocial support
The ÖRK has in the past been involved in establishing psychosocial support services in Afghanistan. These services are invaluable in the current situation, as they provide emotional support to the injured and their relatives. The psychological strain after such a catastrophe can be enormous, and it is important to support those affected on this level as well.
Historical parallels and differences
Afghanistan has repeatedly been struck by severe earthquakes in the past. The devastating 2023 quake, in which thousands of people lost their lives, is still fresh in people's memories. In comparison, the current quake is similar in magnitude, but the damage is even more severe because the infrastructure was already weakened.
Other countries in the region, such as Pakistan and India, also face similar natural disasters. The geographic position on the Indian Plate, which is pushing against the Eurasian Plate, makes the region particularly susceptible to earthquakes.
Impact on the population
For the people on the ground, the effects of the earthquake are devastating. Many have lost their homes and are now homeless. Access to water and food is difficult in the affected areas because many roads and bridges have been destroyed. The fear of aftershocks is omnipresent, and many people do not dare to return to their damaged houses.
A fictional expert, Dr. Hans Müller, a geologist at the University of Vienna, explains: "Earthquakes of this magnitude are, unfortunately, not uncommon in the region. The geological conditions make it virtually impossible to predict or prevent such disasters. All the more important is that the international community provides assistance quickly and without bureaucracy."
International aid and appeals for donations
The Austrian Red Cross has launched an urgent appeal for donations to support relief efforts in Afghanistan. The bank details for donations are:

Future outlook
The coming weeks and months will be crucial for the reconstruction of the affected region. International assistance will be needed to restore infrastructure and to provide people with a perspective. In the long term, strategies must be developed to make buildings in the region more earthquake-resistant and to better prepare the population for such disasters.
The political situation in Afghanistan is, however, complex, and cooperation with the international community is often difficult. Nevertheless, it is of crucial importance that aid be delivered quickly and efficiently to prevent further suffering.
The international community faces the challenge not only of taking short-term relief measures but also of finding long-term solutions that will enable the people of Afghanistan to have a safer future.
